Why children's sleep needs are so different
Infants and toddlers spend more time in deep sleep than adults, which is when growth hormone is released and the brain consolidates memories. As children get older, their sleep architecture gradually shifts toward adult patterns — fewer naps, less total sleep, and more time in lighter sleep stages.
Consistent bedtime
A regular sleep schedule helps regulate your child's circadian rhythm. Aim for the same bedtime within 30 minutes every night, including weekends.
Wind-down routine
A predictable pre-sleep routine — bath, book, bed — signals to your child's brain that sleep is coming. Keep it calm and screen-free for the last 30–60 minutes.
Watch for tired cues
Overtired children often fight sleep harder. Look for eye-rubbing, yawning, or reduced activity as cues to start the bedtime routine before they get overstimulated.
Nap timing matters
Naps too close to bedtime can make it harder to fall asleep at night. For toddlers and preschoolers, aim to finish naps at least 3–4 hours before bedtime.
Sleep recommendations are based on AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) and National Sleep Foundation guidelines. Individual needs vary — always consult your pediatrician if you have concerns about your child's sleep.
