It's based on the 90-minute sleep cycle, which is a well-established average. That said, your cycles might be slightly shorter or longer. Think of the results as a solid starting point. Try the suggested times for a week and adjust from there.

Is this medical advice?

No. We're three people who read a lot of sleep research, not doctors. If you're dealing with persistent sleep problems, see a real healthcare provider. A calculator on the internet is not a substitute for that.
