What Type of Insomnia Do You Have?

Insomnia comes in three clinically distinct patterns and one combination of them. Each responds best to a different intervention. Four questions and we'll point you to the tools that fit.

  1. 1.
Do you usually take more than 30 minutes to fall asleep? Sleep onset latency — the first marker of onset insomnia.
  2. 2.
Do you wake up during the night and struggle to get back to sleep? Sleep maintenance trouble — characteristic of maintenance insomnia.
  3. 3.
Do you wake up at least an hour earlier than you want, and can't fall back asleep? Early-morning awakening — common with circadian phase-advance and depression.
  4. 4.
Has this been happening three or more nights a week for at least a month? Chronicity threshold. Below this, it's transient; above it, it's clinical.
